Prenatal Massage + Acupuncture: Supporting Your Body Through Pregnancy
Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding things a body does. And one of the most under-supported.
Most prenatal care is focused on the baby — which is exactly right. But the person carrying the baby also needs attention, in ways that go beyond what OB appointments provide. Sleep that won't come. Nausea that doesn't quit after the first trimester. Low back pain that builds with every week. A nervous system that feels like it's running on high all the time.
This is where acupuncture and prenatal massage have a real role.
What acupuncture can do during pregnancy
Acupuncture is one of the most well-studied complementary therapies in pregnancy, with a substantial body of research on its safety and effectiveness. What we see in the clinic at Mount Sunny:
First trimester: Nausea and fatigue are the primary complaints. Specific acupuncture points — particularly Pericardium 6 (PC6, Nei Guan, "Inner Gate"), which is also the point behind anti-nausea wristbands — have a substantial research base for reducing nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. This point's action on the Stomach and Pericardium channels has been documented in classical acupuncture texts for centuries and has since been validated in modern clinical trials. Fatigue responds well to gentle constitutional treatment focused on building Blood and Qi.
Second trimester: As the body changes, new patterns emerge — heartburn, headaches, congestion, sciatic pain beginning to appear. This is often the most comfortable trimester, but many people use this window to establish regular sessions before the demands of the third trimester arrive.
Third trimester: Low back pain and pelvic girdle pain are the most common presentations. Sleep becomes harder — the body is uncomfortable, and the mind is active. Edema in the legs and feet often intensifies. Acupuncture addresses all of these directly, and for some patients, we incorporate acupressure points that support optimal positioning in the final weeks.
We work closely with each patient's OB or midwife and adjust our approach accordingly. Certain points are avoided during pregnancy — your practitioner will take a thorough intake and build a protocol specific to your trimester and presentation.
Prenatal massage at Mount Sunny
Prenatal massage is offered from the second trimester onward. Sessions are adapted for safety and comfort — positioning is modified to avoid pressure on the abdomen and lower back (when contraindicated), and our practitioners are trained specifically in prenatal work.
What prenatal massage addresses:
- Lower back and hip tension that accumulates as posture shifts with a growing belly
- Sciatic pain (extremely common in the second and third trimesters)
- Swelling in the legs and ankles, through gentle lymphatic techniques
- Shoulder and neck tension, often from postural changes
- The parasympathetic activation that comes from any skilled therapeutic touch — which benefits both parent and baby
Most people leave feeling a depth of relaxation they haven't accessed in weeks.
Postpartum support
The conversation doesn't end at birth. Postpartum recovery is a significant physical event — blood loss, hormonal shift, disrupted sleep, and the demands of feeding — and TCM has specific protocols for supporting it.
The Flow tincture is one we often reach for in the postpartum period: formulated to support cycle and hormone balance, ease the physical and emotional transitions, and support the body as it recalibrates. The Rest tincture is useful for the sleep disruption that's constant in those early weeks — not a sedative, but herbal support for the nervous system to rest when sleep is actually possible.
Acupuncture postpartum focuses on nourishing Blood, supporting lactation if applicable, and addressing the physical recovery from birth. We recommend beginning within 4–6 weeks of delivery, or earlier in some cases.
A note on safety
All treatments during pregnancy are adapted to your specific situation. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, please let us know — we work in coordination with your medical team and will adjust our approach accordingly. There are certain points and techniques we don't use during pregnancy, and your safety and your baby's are the priority in every session.
Ready to come in? Book a prenatal session at Mount Sunny — we're at 826 N Central Ave in Midtown Phoenix. New patient appointments are 90 minutes and include a full intake so we can understand where you are in your pregnancy and what you need most.
