How It Works

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the face reflects the state of the organs and meridians below it. The skin's health is governed by the Lung, which manages the outer boundary and the skin's surface, and the Liver, which governs smooth circulation and the movement of qi through the face. When the body is treated with acupuncture first, the internal environment improves — and the gua sha work on the face has a better surface to work with.

Gua sha, meaning scraping in Chinese, is a classical bodywork technique applied gently on the face with oil to move lymph, soften holding patterns in the facial muscles, and bring blood and qi toward the surface. Consistent sessions tend to produce cumulative improvements in tone, texture, and the way the face holds its structure over time.

Your Practitioners

This treatment brings together body acupuncture and gentle facial work to support inner calm, circulation, lymphatic movement, facial tension, and a softer glow. Your practitioner adjusts the pace and technique to what your skin and nervous system can receive that day.

Dr. Shelby Ramirez (DACM), Dr. Adrienne Nash (DACM), and Dr. Frederica Crafts (DACM) bring whole-body diagnosis, precise technique, and grounded care to every session.

Common Questions

What is gua sha?

Gua sha is a Traditional Chinese Medicine bodywork technique that uses a smooth tool to glide across the skin, moving lymph, releasing fascial tension, and supporting circulation. In facial treatment, it is applied gently with oil to lift, drain, and bring vitality to the surface. The facial version is much gentler than clinical body gua sha and should feel relaxing and comfortable.

Is it painful?

No. Facial gua sha is gentle and comfortable. The sensation is a light gliding pressure — not scraping. Applied with warm oil, it should feel relaxing and nourishing, not intense.

How often should I come in?

Many patients receive this treatment monthly as a regular skin health practice. If you are working on specific concerns like puffiness, jaw tension, or early signs of aging, more frequent sessions can accelerate results. The combination with body acupuncture in clinic produces results that at-home practice alone cannot replicate.

Can I do gua sha at home?

Yes, and we encourage it. We offer gua sha tools and jojoba oil in our shop so you can maintain between visits. Consistent daily practice with good technique and oil matters more than duration. Your practitioner can show you the correct sequence during your session.
