Shirodhara: The Ayurvedic Treatment That People Ask Us About Most
If you've had Shirodhara, you know exactly what we mean when we say it's difficult to describe. If you haven't, the best way to explain it is this: warm, dosha-appropriate herbal oil is poured in a slow, continuous stream at the mid-brow point — the space between your eyebrows — for the duration of your treatment. You rest on the table, eyes closed, and let the oil do what it does. What it does is hard to quantify.
What tends to happen
Shirodhara stimulates the Ajna point — associated in both Ayurvedic and yogic traditions with intuition, nervous system regulation, and the calming of mental activity. As the warm oil streams continuously at this point, the brain tends to shift into a state that's rarely accessible during ordinary consciousness. Patients use words like: meditative, like floating, like being held, like finally exhaling. Some people cry. Not because anything is wrong — but because something is finally letting go.What the session includes
A Shirodhara session at Mount Sunny also includes facial cleansing and Kansa wand attunement — a traditional Ayurvedic brass tool used for lymphatic drainage, facial tension release, and energy balancing. The whole session is built for depth, not just relaxation. Sessions are up to 45 minutes, depending on your capacity that day.Who it supports
We often recommend Shirodhara for patients who are carrying high mental load and finding it hard to stop — the kind of tiredness that doesn't respond to rest, because the mind never fully disengages. It's also a supportive treatment for:- Sleep onset difficulty (particularly when the mind races at bedtime)
- Anxiety and nervous system dysregulation
- Headaches and congestion
- Emotional processing during tender or transitional seasons
- Anyone who does a lot of intellectually demanding or emotionally demanding work
An honest note
Not everyone has the same Shirodhara experience. Some people feel profound stillness. Some find it deeply activating at first — the nervous system takes time to trust that much quiet. Both responses are valid and expected. We honor what each session brings, without needing it to be a certain way.How to find us
